AT&T Van drives around Tucson Neighborhood
Tue Feb 17 2009

We found this weird van marked with an AT&T logo driving around a Tucson neighborhood. This AT&T truck drove up and down each street in the neighborhood, then went on to the next neighborhood. It is difficult to see in these photos, but there are a bunch of black things on the roof of this van. The black things are some kind of camera we must assume, so is this some kind of new Google Earth type mapping project, only called AT&T Earth?

Lithium vs Alkaline AA Battery Test

Lithium vs Alkaline AA Battery Test

We have used bulk Alkaline batteries for many years now. They are fairly inexpensive and seem to work well in my digital cameras which are the largest user of AA batteries used by us daily. We take photographs for a living so we use our digital cameras every day and go through about a battery a day each month. Alkaline AA batteries cost us about $10 for 24 (More or less depending on Sales, where we buy, etc) this is about 42 cents each or about $15 a month.

Auction at a Tucson School

A few times each year a local school in Tucson, Arizona auctions off their used equipment. There is typically a few hundred square feet of equipment, computers, tools, surplus supplies and even vehicles. These had been live auctions in the past, but are now silent auctions. Bidders offer their best price for each item they are interested in and the high bid is the winner.

USB Stick for Emergency Information

USB Stick for Emergency Information

I wanted a USB memory drive for emergency information and photos but when I looked around I could only find one made specifically for this use and it was nothing special for its high price tag. I decided to make my own and when I saw this red unit with the cap and body designed with a substantial loop for a lanyard (550 cord loop) I figured I could use this one. A bonus is this USB drive ended up costing less than $6 (because we ordered a few things at the same time to cut down on the shipping cost). It was designed for kids so I did need to modify it a bit to remove the logo aimed at kids, this left me with a solid red, sturdy USB drive with a cap for the plug that ca not be lost because it attaches to the loop of cord I added to make it easier to stow the drive in a bag or in the car

Question about Solar

Why can't we put a few satellites up there with a big mirror, then just reflect some good solar energy down to collectors on earth to create power?

solar plant to serve Phoenix area

Arizona Public Service has committed to buying electricity from a second, giant solar energy plant. The Starwood Solar I will generate 290 megawatts in the Harquahala Valley, about 75 miles west of Phoenix, and south of I-10. It will cover 1,900 acres.

The plant will use 3,500 parabolic mirrors [right, credit APS] to heat up fluids that will turn water into steam to turn the turbines. Excess heat will go into molten salt to be used to generate electricity for up to 6 hours after sundown.

APS last year agreed to take power from the Solana Generating Station, a 280-megawatt concentrating solar power plant to be built 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, near Gila Bend.

eBay gold mine listing is worth a read

The stories of the Wild West are often focused on rustlers, gunfights, claim-jumpers and fabulous gold strikes. If you want to read flamboyant story-telling reminiscent of the old days, take a gander at the description of a supposedly fabulous gold mine for sale on eBay.

The seller of the Yellow Jacket [right] and Phoenix mines warns that, "I will say that anyone that is a scammer, crook, charleton, hood, thief, Felon, Corporate Raider, Con Man, or anything of the like will not get anywhere with us."

So, even if you don't have $20 million burning a hole in your pocket, you'll find the listing pretty entertaining.

Water use becoming issue in solar power plans

Water use becoming issue in solar power plans

Federal land managers are raising concerns about water needs for some types of solar energy projects in the Western U.S. An AP story this weekend reprints an email from the director of the National Park Service's Pacific West Region to the BLM's Nevada state director, where he writes, "It is not in the public interest for BLM to approve plans of development for water-cooled solar energy projects in the arid basins of southern Nevada, some of which are already over-appropriated."

Water-cooled solar electric plants are currently the most cost-efficient. Some developers are using air-cooling, which is more expensive, but uses 90% less water. [right, an air-cooled solar electric system, as modeled by BrightSource Energy]

In Arizona, most of the proposed solar projects are outside the central urban areas where water resources are most competitive.

There is growing recognition that solar plants as a renewable resource may be effectively permanent installations, with permanent impacts. This contrasts with traditional energy development projects such as oil and gas or coal. Even though their impacts may be substantial during their operations, they have finite lives.

Renewable, ie possibly perpetual, uses of the land is requiring a paradigm shift in our thinking and planning.

China on buying spree for strategic mineral and energy assets

Well, the Washington Post has picked up on something that many of us have been watching for a long time - China is buying up strategic mineral and energy reserves all over the world, and the current depressed global market for commodities has provided them an opportunity to snap up bargains.

The Post reports that "The deals have allowed China to lock up supplies of oil, minerals, metals and other strategic natural resources it needs to continue to fuel its growth. The sheer scope of the agreements marks a shift in global finance, roiling energy markets and feeding worries about the future availability and prices of those commodities in other countries that compete for them, including the United States."
